Ni cad batteries?

I have a ni-cad battery pack(photo-flash) that is has expired. I want to re-cell it.It has 18 1.2 volt "sub-c" batteries inside. As long as I meet the voltage, will that work just as well, with larger batteries, rather than all the little ones?
